Theanine For Memory Improvement

Theanine for Memory and Many Other Physical Benefits

Many studies have been conducted concerning the amino acid l theanine for memory improvement. It actually has a long history of use; theanine is found in green tea.

The health benefits of green tea which contains theanine are said to be numerous. Regular consumption of green tea is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease, kidney stones and cancer. It is also associated with improved bone density, better dental health and better cognitive or brain function (i.e. theanine for memory).

Many benefits of green tea may be due to compounds other than theanine, including the antioxidants unique to the non-fermented leaves called catechins. Black teas are not rich in catechins, because the fermentation process is a process of oxidation. Antioxidants prevent oxidation of human cells. Purposefully oxidizing antioxidants deplete those compounds.

The amino acid, l theanine, is believed to be directly associated with improved brain function . It is not necessary to drink green tea to ingest theanine. It is added to many dietary supplements, and theanine is sold as a single ingredient supplement.

One study concerning theanine for memory showed improved object recognition. This study, like many, was conducted using rats where they consumed water containing l theanine. Researchers concluded that the hippocampus of the rats fed the solution containing theanine developed much faster than normal.

The hippocampus is an important part of the human brain where short-term memories are consolidated into long-term memories. Damage to this part of the brain results in a kind of amnesia where new memories are not stored. People can remember things that happened prior to the injury, but they cannot remember new things that happen to them, nor can they learn new skills.
