Eat for Brain Power
Your brain must have energy in order to function. Eating is one of the techniques to improve concentration because you simply cannot concentrate if you are hungry or under nourished.
To your brain, it is more important to eat than it is to do anything else. Eating means survival.
Make sure to have breakfast every day. Have a snack before a lecture or an important meeting. Eat every couple of hours to keep your blood sugar (glucose) levels stable. The brain needs glucose for energy.
In order for eating to be one of the techniques to improve concentration, you have to choose the right foods. Include complex carbohydrates in your diet. They are digested slowly and allow for a steady supply of glucose without causing the spikes and dips associated with simple carbohydrates.
Complex carbohydrates include fruits, vegetables and whole grains like oatmeal. Simple carbohydrates include foods that are made from flour and sugar. You might think of complex carbohydrates as real whole foods and simple carbohydrates as man-made, artificial or processed foods.
You may have heard that fish is brain food. It is an old saying, but only recently did we learn why. Fatty fish like salmon contain omega-3 fatty acids called DHA and EPA. Of all the fats in the brain…and there is a lot of fat in the brain…DHA and EPA account for the largest amount. DHA and EPA must be replenished on a regular basis or you will lose brain power.
